The Most Common Questions

Psychotherapy is a counseling experience that enables you to identify psychological (mental, emotional, or of the mind) concerns that impact your day-to-day experience of life in either of the following:

  • In your emotional state either due to depression, anxiety, fear or trauma stemming from an environmental pressure, brain chemical imbalance, genetic predisposition (someone in your family may have a history of anxiety or depression).
  • With a family member (mother, father, brother or sister).
  • With a close friend or intimate partner (i.e. spouse, boyfriend, girlfriend).
  • With a work relationship (co – worker, boss, work colleague).

Psychotherapy enables you to explore the source of the problem state that you are experiencing, problem solve, gain insight and create a action plan to improve your understanding of the problem with the goal of improving your quality of life.

You can expect to be heard, understood, cared for via compassion, concern and support by being invited in to tell your story of how you see your issue or problem with the expectation that you will gain a new and healthy perspective on how to improve, heal, recover and ultimately feel better about yourself and or your circumstance depending on what brought you in.

How it differs from psychotherapy (although similar)
exemplified below:

Coaching
is a professional relationship that utilizes motivation, skill building, strategic planning and goal setting methods.

Coaching focuses on performance and planned change based on a set of goals and or noting an area of blockage that may be preventing progress in one’s endeavors that can be enhanced with the support of a coach.

The psychotherapist primarily focuses on the individual’s human behaviors and issues from a more in-depth and clinical assessment based on various underlying psychological issues that are assessed and warrant in-depth psychotherapy.

Psychotherapy is generally designed to resolve, educate, overcome and or process psychological, emotional, physical and or mental health related issues.

Psychotherapy is designed to focus on you and your circumstance in an effort to be objective with the goal to give you insight, awareness. Your therapist is non-judgmental and is a focused and attentive listener to support, assess and recommend various ways to help you approach life in new ways with new skills. It provides expertise in helping you to improve your life’s circumstances by using some of the tools identified above.

It truly depends on your specific circumstances and or needs. Some individuals may have a short term solution focused need for guidance for a specific issue i.e. completing a work task or school project in a timely manner. For others, the longer term therapeutic process may be more helpful and or beneficial to help with personal growth and development in life depending on the depth and nature of your condition. The beauty is that you and your therapist determine the length and time of your therapy. You and your therapist are partners and get to discuss your goals and create a plan that is suitable for you.
You can expect to get the most out of therapy by working on your goals, assignments, journaling, practicing mindfulness (relaxation techniques) and taking action on the plans and or recommendations discussed during your counseling session between sessions. Most of my clients bring note pads and write during session in an effort to be reminded of key points, recommendations, strategies and or write down their homework assignments which are helpful. It is also important to identify what works best for you and what does not work as most therapists have a plethora of tools to help you to feel and ultimately become better.
